Seton Catholic hosting Fine Arts Silent Auction
The Seton Catholic Preparatory High School Fine Arts Department will host a Fine Arts Silent Auction starting at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, April 30, in the school's cafeteria at 1150 N. Dobson Road in Chandler. The auction will feature student artwork, including artwork by Ahwatukee Foothills resident Katy Bandy, and the community is invited to attend and participate.

Montessori open house

Apply by May 1 for Page Memorial Scholarship
Dr. Mark and Gina Page of Arizona's Vision are offering a financial scholarship to four area students attending Mountain Pointe or Desert Vista high schools. Dr. Page created this scholarship in the loving memory of his mother, who was a music teacher.
Four non-renewable $500 scholarships will be awarded.
Applications must be received in the Desert Vista or Mountain Pointe guidance department by the end of school on May 1.
Single parents eligible for tuition scholarships to return to college
A limited number of tuition scholarships are now available to single parents who have returned to college after a break of at least one year, due to family demands or other commitments.
South Mountain Community College has teamed with Dorrance Scholarship Programs to establish a scholarship program designed specifically for single parents. Awards are available for as much as $4,000 annually, for a maximum of six semesters (three years), and are renewable. The deadline for application is 5 p.m., Friday, May 1.

Pre-register by Friday for MPHS alumni golf tourney discount
Get ready to tee off at the inaugural Mountain Pointe Alumni Golf Tournament on Saturday, May 9, at the Ahwatukee Country Club, 12432 S. 48th St., hosted by the school's boys and girls golf teams. The tournament will feature a four-player scramble with a 1 p.m. shotgun start. Check in is from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Pre-registration fees (by May 1) are $60 per person or $225 per foursome. Late registration fees (May 2 to 6) are $75 per person or $275 per foursome. The fee includes green fees, golf cart, range balls and buffet dinner. A cash prize of $200 will be awarded to the first place team and $150 to the second place team. The tournament will also include prizes for a hole in one, closest to the pin and a raffle. Proceeds will benefit the school's golf teams.
DV football sets parent meeting, barbecue
Desert Vista High School Football will host a barbecue for all existing and incoming football players and their families from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 6, at the school, 16440 N. 32nd St. This is a mandatory meeting for parents of ALL football players. Freshmen parents' orientation begins at 6 p.m. in the auditorium and all other parents will join at 6:30 p.m.

AF Prep students get financial tips from M&I Bank

Through the end of the month, M&I Bank will give away student savings activity books to encourage healthy practice with any MiKids Savings Account opened at all branch locations.
Up to 70 trees planted at SMCC
In honor of Arbor Day, South Mountain Community College students and employees "dug in" and helped plant up to 70 new trees throughout campus on April 22. Funding came from a Phoenix Urban Forestry Grant awarded to SMCC. PUF is division of the city of Phoenix Parks and Recreation.

Host families needed for exchange students
The Educational Resource Development Trust/SHARE! High School Exchange Program is looking for host families for international exchange students for the 2009/10 fall semester or school year. Cronkite students win international RFK Award
A student project on families divided by the United States-Mexico border won a prestigious Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award for the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University.
The project, "Divided Families," won in the college print journalism category. It traces the stories of families who are separated as a result of both legal and illegal immigration and explores the social consequences of public immigration policy.

Downs to speak at ASU's Liberal Arts and Sciences convocation
Investigative journalist, television host and author Hugh Downs will be this year's speaker at the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences convocation. The ceremonies will take place May 15 at Wells Fargo Arena on Arizona State University's Tempe campus.
Downs is distinctively tied to Arizona State University. In 2000, the Hugh Downs School of Human Communication was named in his honor.
God's Garden enrolling for summer school
God's Garden Child Development Center at 1401 E. Liberty Lane has begun enrollment for summer school. The program runs for six weeks (June 1 to 4, 8 to 11, 15 to 18, 22 to 25, July 6 to 9 and July 13 to 16), each week running Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon. Children can register for just one week or all six weeks.
Enrollment is open to everyone ages 2-and-a-half (potty trained) to 6.

Parents of kindergarten-age children urged to register now

Navy Secretary OKs ROTC unit at ASU
The establishment of a Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) at Arizona State University for fall 2010 was announced by Rear Adm. Cliff Sharpe during a recent visit to the Tempe campus. ASU's application for a NROTC unit was approved by the Secretary of the Navy.
The NROTC program was established to educate and train qualified young men and women for service as commissioned officers in the Navy and Marine Corps. A four-year NROTC scholarship features full tuition at a select college or university, all college or university educational fees, a stipend for text books, all uniforms, up to three summer training events and a subsistence allowance for each academic month.
Plans are to have teaching and administrative staffs in place by the summer of 2010 in order to support the arrival of students in August 2010.
