Hoots and hollers echoed from a conference room at the Clarion Hotel Wednesday evening as Ahwatukee Foothills entrepreneur Myrium Morones, known as Mimi M by her radio talkshow listeners, led her first M-Power Student Hour Live seminar to help college hopefuls learn how to earn a debt-free degree. About 20 people attended the active seminar where Morones got them up and moving while teaching 10 ways to earn a college degree without using student loans. "Information is very powerful," Creative Business Solutions' Carol Diamond-Blonder said as she introduced Morones. "Mimi's program is probably one of the most fun programs I've ever listened to and I can almost guarantee she will have her own TV show in the future." Morones, a former Marine, earned her bachelor's degree in business administration at Hawaii Pacific University in Honolulu. However, after taking out student loans to pay tuition, she went into the financial aid office as a sophomore and was told she was on her own in finding scholarship money. "I took the challenge," Morones said. "I earned enough scholarship money to pay my tuition and pay back the loans. Then the college actually hired me to help students do the same." In Hawaii, Morones experienced 50 percent campus enrollment growths in six months at HPU. To date she has successfully helped 2,400 students earn $5,000 to $40,000 a year in cash-equivalent college funding. "In July of 1997 I had one of the most momentous moments of my life," Morones said. "I spent four hours envisioning this business. I knew that this is what I was meant to do." Morones is founder and CEO of Warp Drive Scholarships, Inc. She hosts an AM news-talk radio show on 1100 KNFX on Thursdays from 3 to 4 p.m. "I took all of what people need to know and took away the mystery and enigma to develop 10 steps," Morones said. "And you know how I know this works? Because I did it myself." Warp Drive Scholarships offers full-service financial aid and scholarship process coaching, financial aid and scholarships to under-served student market populations and ongoing support throughout the degree attainment period. Morones also works to facilitate the academic careers of veterans and their family members stationed across the globe. For more information, visit www.m-powerstudenthour.com or www.thewarpdrive.com.
