In Halloween spirit, the Mountain Pointe High School Theater Company will present its mystery movie-like fall drama, Curse of the Werewolf, at 7 p.m. Oct. 25-27 in the school's auditorium. From a touch of romance to chilling mysterious deaths, the cast of 12 Mountain Pointe students will keep the audience laughing through this energetic spoof. "When I was a sophomore in high school we had a new drama teacher and she did this play," first-year performing arts and theater teacher Kimberly Bonagofski said. "I see why now - it's a really high-energy show. It brought the cast and crew together very quickly and, for a new teacher, it was nice." Mountain Pointe junior Jason Krell, 17, plays Buzz Halliburton, an entertainer fallen on hard times. Buzz is summoned by his mysterious uncle to Gargoyle House, a spooky-looking castle on a New England island. Buzz and his partner Admiral Byrd, a penguin who tap dances to Puttin' on the Ritz, encounter a bizarre assortment of "family" and "friends" at Gargoyle House. Colonel Snipes (Michael Skarsten) plots to blow up the island while his wife (Courtney Dietz) wears evening gowns all day. Little Messalina (Corinn Moreno), the resident child terror, keeps baby piranhas for pets. The menacing housekeeper (Amy Lougher) often appears without her head. Due to a family curse there is a werewolf in the house, but nobody knows who it could be. "People start dying and everyone starts accusing everyone else of being a werewolf," Bonagofski said. "This is a great family comedy that is appropriate for all ages. There are laughs that younger people will get and laughs that older people will get." Mountain Pointe senior Jennifer Hernandez, 17, will also bring her talent to the stage as Connie Pigeon, a confident governess that comes to Gargoyle House with Buzz. "She's the character everyone should love right when she steps on stage," Hernandez said. The Mountain Pointe Theater Company's two lead actors are bursting with talent and excited to show off their experience in Curse of the Werewolf. Krell starred in his first theater performance at age 8. He played Prince Charming in Show White at summer camp. "The only real comedy I've got to do was Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing, so I am looking forward to doing a comedy," Krell said. "It's a funny show and we've been working hard to make it the best it can be." Most of Hernandez's background is in musical performance. She started acting at age 6 and has performed with the Valley Youth Theatre and the Ahwatukee Children's Theatre. She currently takes voice lessons from local opera singer Jennifer Song. "I've explored many different areas of theater," Hernandez said. "This is my third straight show (strictly acting) and I actually really love it. It gives me the opportunity to really work on my acting." Tickets for Curse of the Werewolf can be purchased for $5 to $7. For more information, call (480) 759-8449.
