Lucas Selman and his sister Kaitlyn spend a lot of time in the hospital each year. But unlike the sick patients they visit, Lucas and Kaitlyn are there because they enjoy the time they spend at Banner Desert Children's Hospital in Mesa. Lucas, a fourth-grader at Kyrene de la Estrella Elementary School, and Kaitlyn, a sixth-grader at Akimel A-al Middle School, volunteer at the hospital on a regular basis. "We volunteer at most events during the holidays like at Mesa Merry Main Street," Kaitlyn said. "We show the kids how to make toys like picture frames and candy cane mice. It's really rewarding to see the kids' faces when they make a new toy." On Nov. 17 Lucas celebrated his 11th birthday and, instead of asking for gifts, he asked for Target gift cards so he could buy a Nintendo Wii game system for cancer patients at the hospital. "I saved up $150, my sister chipped in and Target made a generous donation of $200," Lucas said. "We also got games for them to play. We hope it will get them up and moving." Lucas, Kaitlyn and two Target representatives delivered the system to the hospital Dec. 5. Their goal is to provide entertainment for cancer patients during their two- to three-day hospital stays for radiation and chemotherapy. "The music therapist is always trying to get them up and moving," Kaitlyn said. "I think it will be a great addition to the hospital."
