"Soup"er Bowl predicts winner yet again

For the past nine years, Kyrene de la Colina Elementary School students have had a 90 percent success rate at predicting who will win the Super Bowl by collecting cans. This year they were right again. Each year Colina fifth-graders head-up the "Soup"er Bowl, a food drive where kindergarten through fifth grade students bring in canned goods and place them under a sign representing which team they think will win the Super Bowl. The team with the most cans wins the Colina "Soup"er Bowl. "What we really try to make the kids understand is they are doing this for their neighbors, not the poor and desperate street people," Colina fifth-grade teacher Arlen Sykes said. "You have teachers and parents out there who are going through desperate times." Colina students brought in boxes and cans of food Jan. 28 to Feb. 1. By Friday afternoon, the stage in the school's multi-purpose room overflowed with Cheerios, peanut butter and canned vegetables. All proceeds were donated to the Kyrene Family Resource Center. "That's the most important part, having an opportunity to help here, close to home in the community," Sykes said. "After the holidays giving slows down. This is an opportunity to help fill shelves at the food bank this time of year." Friendly competition took place in classrooms all week, but ultimately the winner was determined. The Giants won with 847 cans. The Patriots collected 802. "We've never had it this close," Sykes said. "It's as close as it's ever been. Usually I can predict the winner just looking, but this year it was hard to tell."
