Although the tournament will be somewhat smaller than previous years because of the tough economy, the 4th Annual Irish Mist Golf Scramble benefitting Camp Hope will continue as planned on Saturday, Dec. 5 at the Club West Golf Club in Ahwatukee Foothills.

The golf tournament, which raised more than $60,000 in the past three years for the Barrow Neurological Foundation, hopes to raise enough funds for kids to attend Camp Hope. The summer camp is an annual program that serves more than 70 local kids ages 8 to 16 whose lives have been touched by living with a parent or loved one with Multiple Sclerosis.

MS hits very near to home for some of the committee members of Irish Mist; they live with it.

Tracy Anthony and Ross Murray, both Ahwatukee residents, founded the event as a result of Tracy’s diagnosis with MS and Ross’ brother-in-law, Larry Davis Jr., passing away due to the disease.

The name “Irish Mist” has a significant meaning as well. Tracy’s unbeatable high school softball team was called Irish Mist and she hopes to channel through that same invincible spirit in combating MS, event organizer Patty Durant said.

This is the first year the tournament will be benefitting Camp Hope, and those participating said they want to increase the number of kids who get to go.

“It doesn’t cost a lot to send a kid to the camp ... most of them act as caregivers and this gives them a chance to be kids again,” Durant said.

About 60 golfers will be present Saturday and if any last minute golfers wish to register, they still can, Durant said.

The registration fee is $125 per player or $500 for a team of four players. All proceeds made from the event will directly benefit Camp Hope, and any donations made are tax deductible.

The registration covers the players’ green fee, range balls, dinner and entertainment.

The event is open to the public and the committee members encourage all who have been affected by MS to attend. For those who wish to just come to the dinner and entertainment portion of the evening can purchase a dinner ticket for $40.

Mid First Bank will also be doing a coin fundraiser at the tournament. Guests can donate there spare change and the bank will match the first $1,000 donated.

A silent and live auction, a raffle and dinner will begin at 5 p.m.

“We’re going to be auctioning off some really awesome holiday gift baskets, so people can even get their holiday shopping done while they’re here,” Durant said.

To register for the event or to donate, visit www.irishmist4ms.org or call Durant at (602) 300-4660.
