Having trouble with your spiritual sight? Ask Him to open your eyes

I got new glasses last week. After wearing them all day every day and then taking them off at night, things look a bit blurry in one eye. I am amazed that I did not realize my need for new glasses until I got them. And it takes a little bit of adjusting to get used to wearing glasses. I have to remember to put them on!

I love being able to see, and I thank God for my eyesight. But sometimes I am “blinded” when I only look at the physical reality of things around me. My spiritual sight is hindered if I only believe in what I can see. Sometimes what I can see looks very bleak indeed, and I have to remember to use that spiritual sight much the same as I have to remember to put on my new glasses. There is so much more than meets the eye. There is a spiritually perceived unseen reality.

2 Kings tells about a battle between Israel and Aram. The prophet Elisha had a servant who was upset because it appeared that the enemy had a great advantage over them. I love how Elisha answered him. “Don’t be afraid, for those who are with us outnumber those who are with them.” Then Elisha prayed, “Lord, please open his eyes and let him see.” So the Lord opened the servant’s eyes. He looked and saw that the mountain was covered with horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha” (2 Kings 6:16-17).

An angelic messenger came to visit Daniel after a time when he had fasted and prayed for three weeks straight. He told Daniel not to be afraid “for from the first day that you purposed to understand and to humble yourself before your God, your prayers were heard. I have come because of your prayers” (Daniel 10:12). He goes on to tell about a battle in the spiritual realm as a result of Daniel’s prayers. Oh, that we could have faith like Daniel, who did not give up even though he did not see with his physical eyes an immediate response to his prayers.

A friend of mine is in a very difficult situation, and from our earthly perspective, it looks hopeless. But she is hanging in there with a faith like that mentioned in Hebrews 11:1: “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” The Lord has given her five things to cling to during this time, and with her permission, I will share them.

1) Wait on the Lord

2) Do not lose heart

3) Hope in the Lord

4) Have perseverance and patience

5) Be strong and courageous, for the Lord your God is with you.

These are all things that would be next to impossible to do without faith. It is so hard to believe in what we cannot see, especially when circumstances tell us otherwise, but that is how faith grows. As my faith grows, my spiritual eyesight gets even sharper.

2 Corinthians 4:17-18: “For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”

Jesus gave sight to the blind many times during His earthly ministry, and He still does. If you are having trouble with your spiritual sight, ask Him to open your eyes. The first verse of Amazing Grace ends with the same words that were spoken by the man whose eyes Jesus opened in Matthew 9: “I was blind but now I see.” Often it takes the realization that we have been blinded before our eyes can be truly opened.
