The movie directors and producers of tomorrow are students today, and for the past week 30 Kyrene del Milenio Elementary School students got to try their hands at writing scripts and manning cameras to create videos in honor of Kyrene School District math coach Sarah Baird.

Baird, who is a finalist for the National Education Association Foundation’s Awards for Teaching Excellence, will be honored at a black tie awards gala in Washington, D.C. in February, and the video shot by Milenio students this week will be shown to introduce her at the gala.

Employees from the Pearson Foundation, which publishes education materials, were on hand to provide the necessary equipment and teach Milenio students how to use the equipment.

“The big idea was to make videos that portray a day in the life of Sarah Baird and show how she helps students and teachers,” JR Sheetz, from the Pearson Foundation, said. “We’re visiting schools where the top five finalists for the awards teach, and we’ve been to Oklahoma and Illinois, and after Phoenix we’re heading to Alaska and Utah.”

The Pearson Foundation provided mobile phones for Milenio students to record interviews and audio on, as well as lap tops for them to edit the video.

“They showed us how to control the mobile phones, and we worked in pairs with one person interviewing and the other person being a camera man,” student Matthew Young said. “We’ve never done editing before, and it was cool to add different clips, music and titles.”

The Milenio students have known Baird for several years.

“Ms. Baird comes into our classroom every month, and I’ve known her ever since I first came to Milenio,” Young said.

Milenio principal Jim Verrill was interviewed for the student-created videos, and was happy that the Pearson Foundation brought the video-making opportunity to his students.

“For the students to have an opportunity to work with professionals and learn how to take video, edit it, and learn how to use new technology is great,” he said. “They’re going to want to do more of this in their other classes, which is good because we do have our own video equipment.”

Verrill was also happy to honor Baird for her hard work in the Kyrene School District.

“Sarah brings great energy and passion for teaching to Milenio,” he said. “Her dedication to seeing students succeed is unmatched.”

When the groups of students finish their videos, the Pearson Foundation will compile portions of each video to make one video for the awards gala. Each student will also be able to keep a copy of their own videos.
