People are trying to cut costs anyway they can right now, and Empower 3, a local personal training studio, has recognized this trend and created a training program geared specifically toward people watching their budgets.
Empower 3 opened its doors in July, and the program consists of “small group” personal training. The idea is that up to three people can share one personal trainer and, therefore, split the cost of a single personal training session.
“Cost elsewhere in Phoenix for a personal training session is $35, so I made my sessions cost $36 because the number makes the math easy to divide,” said Devan Grell, executive trainer and owner of Empower 3. “People can split the cost amongst themselves however they want as long as I get the whole amount.”
There is an obvious cost benefit at Empower 3 with shared sessions averaging out to $12 per person but, according to Grell, there are also benefits from exercising together in a group.
“The name Empower 3 came from the idea of having three people work together and encourage each other,” he said. “Friends are accountable to each other and themselves.”
Three identical exercise stations are set up in the Empower 3 studio, and a workout is posted on each station so that people can move on to the next exercise if they finish before the other people in their session.
“I spend my time pacing back and forth between the three people to work with each person,” Grell said.
Sessions at Empower 3 start with endurance workouts and then progress to strength and power exercises. Bebe Axelrod has been impressed with the change she has seen in her fitness level since she started working out at Empower 3.
“My feet and knees used to hurt so much that I couldn’t even take my dog out to walk or complete a shift at IKEA,” Axelrod said. “After my sessions at Empower 3 I have been able to participate in a half marathon and even go hiking.”
According to Grell, people of all fitness levels and ages are welcome at Empower 3.
“It’s OK to have one person in a personal training group in shape and another not in shape because I can tailor the exercises for each person,” he said.
Grell also encourages people not to hesitate if they are considering starting an exercise program.
“A lot of people put off fitness programs because they want to be in better shape before they start a program,” he said. “If you don’t know what you’re doing on your own you won’t get very far though.”
Although Empower 3 has only been open for a couple of months, the training studio has already seen a variety of people in its training groups ranging from husband-wife and father-daughter combos to groups of young mothers.
“We had one girl in her 20s join by herself and pay the full price, but eventually she brought her 50-year-old father to share her sessions,” Grell said.
