Christmas came early this year for Ahwatukee Foothills resident Suzanne Miller, who was recently presented with a car by her friends from the Ahwatukee Assembly of God congregation.

Miller has been without a car since last December, when her car had a fuse malfunction.

“My car literally caught on fire,” Miller said. “I’m a single mom, and I was just out.”

After selling her destroyed car for scrap, Miller and her son and daughter came to rely on the ALEX bus and Valley Metro. Miller’s family really began to feel the effects of not having a personal car when the summer months began to heat up.

“In June and July we were walking to the grocery store and carrying things home,” Miller said. “It wasn’t easy.”

The Millers never let their situation get them down, however.

“My daughter would pray every night for me to get a new car,” Miller said. “I even had a vision in a dream that God was going to give me a blue four-door car. I never thought that I wasn’t going to get a car eventually.”

The Miller family’s prayers were answered sooner than later. On Sept. 5, various members of the Ahwatukee Assembly of God congregation presented her with the keys to a 2001 blue four-door Hyundai Accent.

“It was one of the best days of my life,” Miller said.

The idea to collect money for a car for the Miller family was developed by Ahwatukee Assembly of God members Jeff and Brenda. According to Brenda, she and her husband decided to approach other church members about collecting money because they both felt that Miller, who has been in their congregation for three years, truly deserved their help.

“Suzanne was so humble and never complained about not having a car,” Brenda said. “When we started approaching other church members for donations, some of them didn’t even know she didn’t have a car.”

After about four months, Jeff and Brenda had collected enough money to buy the Miller family a car.

“Everyone was willing to help, and they were all happy and excited to present her with the car,” Brenda said.

Aside from the car, the church members also paid for the car’s tags and registration, six months of insurance and gave Miller a $50 gas gift card.

Now that Miller has a car of her own, she is more than willing to share her good fortune with other people.

“I take anybody anywhere now,” Miller said. “In the nine months I was without a car so many people helped me, and now that God has given me a car, I have to reciprocate.”

This story of community support and generosity may be surprising to some due to the current economic climate, but Miller believes that her faith will always provide for her.

“Our pastor talks about the world’s economy, and God’s economy,” she said. “God provides no matter what.”
