Greg Hoffman is preparing to participate in Arizona’s 3 Day Walk to benefit Susan G. Komen For the Cure for the fifth consecutive year, but this year’s walk will be different for Hoffman as he will be walking in memory of his wife, Jen.
Jen Hoffman passed away in April of this year, but her husband has chosen to continue on in his efforts to raise money for breast cancer, which is what brought the couple together.
“She approached me and asked me to make a donation to her five years ago,” Hoffman said. “We became friends and ultimately got married.”

Team Betty Boobs fundraising for 3 Day
Ahwatukee Foothills residents have formed Team Betty Boobs to walk in the 3 Day to fight breast cancer. The team’s goal is to raise $12,000.
A “Flocked 4 Breast Cancer” fundraiser is under way, where pink lawn flamingos are placed in people’s yards for donations. The idea is that one person pays the team to “flock” another person as a surprise. Twenty-five flamingos are $25 and 50 flamingos are $50. A sign explains what it is for and celebrates if it is for a special occasion such as a birthday.
The team is also planning an event from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, at Jilly’s American Grill of Chandler on Ray and 54th Street. Jilly’s has agreed to donate 20 percent of food and beverage purchases beyond their average take for a weeknight. A specialty pink drink will be served in honor of the team’s efforts and a buffet will be offered for $12. T-shirts will also be available for purchase.
A raffle drawing will take place in early November. The prize list is being finalized, and more prize donations are being sought.

This year Hoffman’s team for the 3 Day will consist of 21 family members and friends of the Hoffmans. While each team is required to raise $2,300 to participate in the walk, the team recently eclipsed $61,000.
“Each year we hold a golf tournament in May, which kicks off our fundraising efforts,” Hoffman said. “The rest of the fundraising is distributed across various events, and we just talk to anybody about it.”
Even if people cannot make a monetary donation, Hoffman hopes that residents come out to the streets of Ahwatukee Foothills when the 3 Day goes through the area.
“It means so much to every walker when you have the support of the community during the walk,” he said.
Hoffman’s team is called Team Thrivr, which has a very personal meaning.
“Maya Angelou said to survive is necessary, to thrive is elegant, and I always called Jen our thriver,” Hoffman said.
Team Thrivr will hold a fundraiser at Nello’s in Ahwatukee Foothills on Tuesday, Oct. 20. Ten percent of all sales on the evening of the 20th will go to support the team in its walk in the 3 Day.
“They’re going to pink it up a little bit and do a tribute to Jen,” Hoffman said. “Ironically, Jen and I met at Nello’s.”
Although Hoffman will be participating this year without his wife, he plans to continue on in her memory.
“It was an easy decision for me,” he said. “The very drugs that kept my wife alive and allowed her to battle cancer for so many years were developed directly from money raised at events like this.”
Nello’s is located at 4710 E. Warner Road. To donate to Team Thrivr, visit www.the3day.org.
