The German word “Bundt” translates into English as “gather round,” and the local franchise Nothing Bundt Cakes has built a philosophy around the phrase.
“When our cakes are brought into offices, people gather together around the cake to cut and eat it, and they talk about their day,” said Nothing Bundt Cakes franchise owner Rocky Rebert. “It’s different than taking cookies into an office when people grab a few and take them back to their desks. Cakes build relationships.”
Bundt cakes are circular with a hole in the middle, and Rebert has found that people seem to flock around his cakes once they taste them.
Nothing Bundt Cakes has been open in Ahwatukee Foothills for more than six years, but Rebert and his wife Theresa purchased the store in October. Despite an economic recession, the store has been holding its own.
“We just had the best December the store has ever had,” Rebert said. “The great people here in Ahwatukee and our great product have kept us going.”
Nothing Bundt Cakes is known for its moist and flavorful cake, as well as its cream cheese and butter frosting. A new line of cakes called “bundtinis” are being launched at all Nothing Bundt Cakes stores this weekend, and the public is welcome to come to the store for a free sample this Friday and Saturday.
“The bundtini is similar to the size of a cupcake, and will give us our fourth size of cake available,” Theresa Rebert said. “They will be sold by the dozen, and are great for gift ideas.”
Bundt cakes have made appearances throughout the Ahwatukee Foothills community at events including birthdays, anniversaries, wedding and baby showers, corporate functions and even bereavements. One of Rocky Rebert’s favorite parts of his job is helping people make occasions special.
“We help people figure out what kind of cake they want, and how they want to decorate it with bow colors and different themes,” he said. “It’s great when we get calls from people thanking us for all of our help.”
Rebert is by no means a veteran baker or cake decorator, but he has found joy in his second career at Nothing Bundt Cakes.
“I was in the printing industry for 27 years, and I decided it was time for a change,” Rebert said. “We took a leap of faith and bought into the company.”
Rebert went to corporate Nothing Bundt Cake training where he learned the recipes that are strict and highly protected.
“The corporate employees come and do quality checks on us throughout the year, which we welcome because it ensures that we are providing a high- level product.”
According to Rebert, his past and present careers could not be more different.
“For the first time in 27 years I love waking up at 5 a.m. and coming into work,” he said. “I love meeting customers and hearing their stories.”
Nothing Bundt Cakes is at 4722 E. Ray Road, and is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. Customers can place orders online or in the store, and nationwide shipping is available.
