Women looking for a brief getaway from their hectic lifestyles can escape to a weekend devoted to rejuvenating, relaxing and having fun.

The Ahwatukee Foothills Family YMCA is partnering with The Living Wellness Retreats to sponsor a woman’s wellness retreat and fundraiser May 14 through 16 at Sky-Y Camp in Prescott.

“We’re targeting women who want to focus on achieving better health and wellness, busy moms who need a break, and working women who want to take some time for themselves,” said Dawn Rutledge, owner of The Living Well Retreats. “Any women who is just looking to get an escape and get some time to nurture her mind, heart, body and spirit in a retreat setting away from their busy lives.”

A fast daily pace can cause stress-related illnesses, said Rutledge, a former owner of Curves Ahwatukee.

“As women, we’re constantly taking care of other people, and it’s at the expense of our own self care. It’s time to reflect and slow down,” she said.

The May retreat will offer a variety of group fitness classes, including yoga, Pilates, kickboxing and others.

“We really want people to come and have a good time, and enjoy being fit and enjoy all the different options that are available for them to experience health and wellness,” Rutledge said.

Activities like group and self-guided hikes, guided meditation and adventure experiences, such as rope courses and zip-lines, are also part of the retreat.

Participants will learn from a variety of interactive seminars on nutrition, life balance, body awareness and acceptance.

Information from retreat lessons can benefit entire families when the women return home, Rutledge said.

“If we’re getting the tools we need to live healthier lives, that’s something that affects all the people around us,” she said.

Instruction, handouts and materials to take home, accommodations, meals and beverages are included in the $260 registration fee. Transportation is not provided, although organizers plan to work out a carpool schedule with participants.

A portion of registration proceeds will benefit the YMCA’s Strong Kids campaign. Separate donations for the campaign can also be made online when registering, at www.ymcawomenswellnessretreat.eventbrite.com.

“There’s a need for people to take time away from the daily grind and take time for themselves,” Rutledge said. “It’s about having a good time and recapturing that period in our lives when we enjoyed being healthy, active and fit. It can change the way we do everything.”

Kathleen Gormley is interning this semester for the Ahwatukee Foothills News. She is a sophomore at Arizona State University.
