When U.S. troops are stationed overseas life for their families continues at home, and that includes work, busy schedules and bills, all of which have to be handled with one less parent than the families are used to having.
Operation Home Front, a national organization with an Arizona branch founded by Margy Bons, strives to make life easier for families while their loved ones are abroad.
“We support Arizona military and their families when they have dire financial need,” Bons said. “If they can’t fix their car, pay rent or buy groceries, we help them out.”
This Saturday, March 13, Ahwatukee Foothills’ Discount Tire is hosting a car show to benefit Operation Home Front. The event is free, and Discount Tire will provide free hot dogs and soda for the public.
“We’re going to have about 25 cars, the majority of them being classic hot rods and muscle cars,” said Marty Young, senior assistant manager at Discount Tire. “We’re raffling stuff off from local businesses like a resort stay at Wild Horse Pass, nice dinners and gift certificates. Everything was donated to us, so every dime we earn will go to Operation Home Front.”
Young got the idea to raise money for Operation Home Front when his childhood friend, who is a veteran of the Iraq War, came into Discount Tire to buy new tires last month.
“My friend was almost killed in Iraq, and when he came in here to get tires we came up with the idea to have a car show to benefit Operation Home Front,” Young said. “We’re also hoping to bring as many people as possible over to this side of Ahwatukee to help them learn that these great restaurants and businesses who donated raffle prizes exist.”
Discount Tire customers who attend the car show will receive coupons for $25 off their next purchase of more than $300 and $50 off their next purchase of more than $500.
Bons said the car show is well attended and that the event raises awareness for what troops and their families are going through during deployment.
“I think people need to remember that when they see a soldier or Marine there is a family member behind them as well,” she said. “I lost a son in Iraq, and it’s very important for me to know that the families of troops are not being forgotten.”
The efforts of Operation Home Front also help alleviate stress troops feel for their families while they are deployed.
“If something bad is happening back here on the home front with a troop’s spouse or children we don’t want that to be another stress on them when they’re serving overseas,” Bons said.
Discount Tire’s car show will be March 13 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Discount Tire is located at 4831 E. Chandler Blvd. For more information, call (480) 785-0017.
