Ahwatukee Foothills may be a relatively small community, but its residents comprise a melting pot of diverse cultures, all of which KO Barbershop is eager to cater to.

Dhil Johnson, owner of KO Barbershop, hails from Jamaica, N.Y., and has brought his expertise as a stylist to Ahwatukee Foothills.

Johnson is hoping to break down racial barriers through his barbershop.

“Usually in each community there are different Caucasian, African-American and Hispanic barbershops, but we offer the best service for each nationality,” he said. “I want to break through the establishment with diversity.”

So far, Johnson has found that his barbershop is an ideal fit for Ahwatukee Foothills.

“To me, Ahwatukee is an intimate and family-oriented community,” he said. “My barbershop has a clean, comfortable and safe environment, which is good for Ahwatukee.”

KO Barbershop is also striving to be a shop where the entire family can come for grooming needs.

“The kids can get their hair braided while dad’s getting his hair cut and mom’s getting her nails done,” Johnson said. “We have a new nail tech, and we’re also looking for a masseuse to expand our services even more.”

According to Johnson, his employees’ vast experience sets KO Barbershop apart from other barbershops in the area.

“I have 20 years of experience as a stylist, and my manager and stylist Renee Young has 40 years of experience,” he said. “The service at KO is top notch.”

Johnson also creates designs for hair that are difficult to find elsewhere. One of his favorite recent designs was shaving the Arizona Cardinal’s mascot into one of his clients’ hair.

“We are craftsmen at KO, and this is our passion,” he said. “If you come to KO you’re getting the Mercedes, not the Honda Accord.”

Despite its high level of service, KO Barbershop’s prices are reasonable. A man’s haircut runs $20, with children’s haircuts priced at $15. Special discounts are available through KO’s e-mail list.

“If you come in and join our e-mail list, you will receive special father and son discounts, senior discounts, referral specials and half-price discount days,” Johnson said.

KO Barbershop is located at 4142 E. Chandler Blvd. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call (480) 759-1269.
