God really does supply all we need for each day

A few years ago I took my kids camping near Lake Powell. The trip ended up being one disaster after another.

The first night we woke up covered with ants. The air mattress I was sharing with my son had a slow leak, and we soon found ourselves on the hard ground.

The next day my sister-in-law’s boat got too close to shore because it was so windy and ran aground on some rocks. We went back to the campground and discovered that the brand new awning for their camper had gotten bent in the high winds and was twisted on top of the roof. Without thinking, her mother hopped up on the camper roof to try and pull it down, and within a few seconds she was knocked off by the wind.

After returning from a long trip to the ER came the realization that it was still much too windy for a campfire. The weenies and s’mores weren’t going to happen, and there weren’t many other choices for food. My kids and I trudged sadly back to our own campsite in the dark, only to discover that the tent poles had broken in the high winds, and half of our tent was collapsed.

A nice hot shower sounded like a good way to end a miserable day, so we drove down to the shower house. The showers needed eight quarters to work. I looked in my wallet and saw a few pennies and nickels, but only two quarters. It was very late at night, the store was not open, and there was no change machine.

I took the two quarters out of my purse, looked at my children, closed my wallet and prayed. It was a simple desperate plea of, “Oh please, God, oh please, oh please,” but God knew what I needed.

I opened up the change compartment of my wallet and there was a shiny quarter mixed in with the other change. Wow! I took it out and repeated the procedure. Sure enough, there was another quarter! This happened four more times, and we ended up with a grand total of eight quarters.

Two dollars might not seem like a big deal, but the Lord knew those eight quarters (and the shower they purchased) were exactly what we needed at that moment. He is faithful even in giving us the little things. He reminded me that trusting Him needs to be a daily, and oftentimes a moment-by-moment occurrence.

The Lord provided manna for the Israelites in the wilderness. There was no stockpile or storehouse, but only enough for what they needed for each day. “Then the Lord said to Moses, “I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test them and see whether they will follow my instructions.” (Exodus 16:4)

The prophet Elijah visited a poor widow who had only enough flour and oil to bake a final meal for herself and her son. But when Elijah asked her to make a cake for him first and then some for herself and her son, he promised, “For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the Lord gives rain on the land.” (1 Kings 17:14) God kept His promise, and they had enough for each day.

Philippians 4:19 says, “And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” He really will, whether we have physical or spiritual needs, and whether we need manna or quarters. When we trust the Lord, we’ll discover time and time again as we walk in faith that He really does supply all we need for each day.

I meant to end the article here, but my son questioned me on the needs of the people in Haiti and wondered how this verse applies to them. “His riches in glory in Christ Jesus” might mean the things that we claim as ours but are really God’s. As we give sacrificially of the things He has trusted to our possession (money, time, skills, etc.), thus helping to supply others’ needs, the Lord will bless us and take care of our needs in other ways. At least that’s how I see it. Your thoughts?
