Dear Claudia:

I need to do a major spring cleaning at my house. Where do you suggest I start?

Answer:

I am glad spring is here. It is time to open windows, get some fresh air and bring flowers or greenery into our homes. It is also a perfect time to de-clutter, paint and discard any decor that looks tired or outdated and even to start that remodeling project we have been putting off.

I suggest you start with the room that you use the most. Once that is complete, you will have a sense of accomplishment that the rest of the house should be much easier to finish. Identify what needs to be done and determine your budget. Depending on the situation you might need to schedule the process step by step to complete it within a reasonable time frame. I myself have been struggling with a big mess in the garage and it is always the last place I want to think about, but I have made a commitment to get it done this month.

Spring cleaning is not usually something we look forward to, especially if we have a big remodeling project. Once it is done, we get a renewed pride of ownership and can enjoy the rest of the season even more.

Dear Claudia:

I would like to enjoy spending more time outdoors this year. How can I spruce up the patio?

Answer:

Here in Arizona we are very lucky to have wonderful weather for such a long time. Whether you have a large or small patio it is worth getting it ready to enjoy during the year. This is also the ideal time to do a major project like adding a pool or even buying new patio set.

In order to spruce up what you have, you can paint wooden or metal patio furniture and recover the cushions to make them look fresh. Replace the faded or broken umbrella and other accessories if necessary. To add softness use extra pillows, some garden décor and an outdoor area rug. Do not forget the candles and lighting for evenings. Compliment the color scheme with flowers, greenery and coordinated pottery. Decorate it as if it were an extension of your home. It is always nice to have a fan or an outside heater to create the ideal temperature.

Investing some time and money now in our patios allows us to take advantage of all the great weather and enjoy a lot of memorable times with the people we love.
