A beautiful girl in a small and ancient Japanese village shyly admitted that she was pregnant. Her angry parents demanded to know who the father was.

At first resistant to confess, the anxious and embarrassed girl finally pointed to Hakuin, the spiritual master whom everyone previously revered for living such a pure life. When the outraged parents confronted Hakuin with their daughter’s accusation, he simply replied, “Is that so?”

When the child was born, the parents brought it to the Hakuin, who now was viewed as a pariah by the whole village. They demanded that he take care of the child since it was his responsibility. “Is that so?” Hakuin said calmly as he accepted the child.

For many months he took very good care of the child until the daughter could no longer withstand the lie she had told. She confessed that the real father was a young fisherman in the village whom she had tried to protect.

The parents immediately went to Hakuin to see if he would return the baby. With profuse apologies they explained what had happened. “Is that so?” Hakuin said as he handed them the child.

I just love this story as it reminds us all to stay in the present moment when things are perhaps un-just, or simply out of balance.

We always share with our clients that their bodies have a message to tell.

Sometimes people speak of their bodies as if it is separate from them. Sometimes when a symptom seems unbearable, there is a healing that takes place when people learn that often their body is simply crying out for a change.

Perhaps one’s nutritional choices are the source of distress? Perhaps one’s relationship is out of balance and needs some attention? Perhaps one has something to say that would ease a burden he carries?

Whatever it is, there is a story to be told.

In addition, sometimes someone’s story that is offered to you may not be a perfect fit.

Perhaps there is something you want to accomplish, and others offer you limiting and negative beliefs.

Perhaps you are ready to make a change and those around you are uncomfortable with your desire for growth.

Many may remember the old story that is told where crabs that are placed in a bucket seem to pull down their fellow crab if he or she is attempting to ascend out of the bucket.

When it seems as though there is no solution, or when it appears that others are attempting to offer you reasons why something cannot be done perhaps ask – “Is that so?”
