Jim (Big Cat) Williams passes away

Submitted Photo

Jim (Big Cat) Williams, 86, of Ahwatukee, passed away peacefully at his home on Dec. 11, 2015, in Phoenix.

A celebration of Jim’s life will be held at the Ahwatukee Country Club, 12432 S. 48th St. on at 11 a.m. Dec. 29, 2015.

Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Tess Williams and granddaughter Lauren Williams. He is survived by daughter Paula Pinheiro of Phoenix; son Steve Williams and daughter-in-law Deborah of Nashville, Tenn.; daughter Teresa Schwager and son-in-law Robert of Galt, Calif.; and daughter Cindy Cole of Peoria; and nine amazing grandchildren, Eddie, Miste, Jason, Jenifer, Janette, Jared, Deanna, Nikki and Jimmy; 14 beautiful great-grandchildren and at least 4 or 5 hole-in-ones.

Jim was born in the small town of West Union, Ill. Having lost his father at an early age, Jim learned the value of hard work and family. Shortly after joining the Army, while on leave in Nashville, Jim met the love of his life, a blues and jazz singer, Mary Odessa also known lovingly as “Tess.” While in the service Jim and his family traveled throughout Europe and Africa.

Jim retired after 21 years of service and became the West Coast sales representative for Briggs Mfg., a wholesale plumbing supplier, which led Jim and family to Arizona in 1972, where he enjoyed retirement and being original members of the Ahwatukee Country Club, along with winning several club championships.

Jim was a man’s-man who loved to tell stories of his life. Looking back Jim would have said he spent his time on earth just the way he wanted. He traveled to every place on earth that he ever wanted to go, and loved taking Tess to Hawaii every year and afterwards with his kids.

On behalf of his family, we are thankful for his homemade wisdom — spoken not with fancy words, but with unpolished rough-around-the-edges realness. For his unwavering faith in us, when he understood us, and especially when he didn’t.

For the countless, unselfish sacrifices he made on our behalf, so we could have the kind of life some people are never fortunate to have, nor could imagine.

For taking the time to teach us how to live a life worth living, to find courage in the hard times, to find the best in others, to laugh often and love much.

Finally, to always keep hope, faith and love alive, our lives have been forever blessed.
