Stephanie Ann Kuells went to be with our angels on Wednesday, Feb. 20. She was born on Aug. 3, 1988, to Jennifer and Keith Kuells at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. This happened to be her father’s 30th birthday. What a beautiful gift! Stephanie had many challenges in her short life, but she tackled each one with determination, beauty and grace.

Elizabeth Ann Misner Johnson, 73, passed away unexpectedly in Phoenix on Dec. 20.

Jonathan M. Joseph of Grand Blanc, Mich., 25, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013 at Hurley Medical Center. He is the son of former Ahwatukee Foothills News publisher Jason Joseph.

Janet R. Harkness, 88, passed away on Oct. 26. Raised in Los Angeles, Janet attended UCLA, obtaining her master’s degree in education. She then returned to teach at U.E.S., the training and experimental school on the campus of UCLA for over 30 years. She loved Native American history and spent many years taking her students to reservations in Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Canada.

On May 20, 1980 an angel was brought onto this Earth in Phoenix — his name was Scott Michael Drew. On Aug. 30, 2012 our Lord returned him to Heaven peacefully after a long courageous fight with Cystic Fibrosis.

Francis (Frank) William Thraen Jr., 80, of Ahwatukee, passed away on Tuesday, July 24 from Parkinson’s disease, after a long, wonderful, and fulfilling life. He was born on Aug. 30, 1931 in Miami, Ariz., to Virginia and Frank Thraen, Sr.

Shirley Christman, age 90, passed away July 7 in Holland, Mich. after months in Hospice House of Holland. She is now reunited with her husband, George Christman age 92, who also passed away in April. They are survived by their five children, their spouses, and grandchildren. They are Bruce (Austin, TX) Mark (Lansing, Mich.), Giselle Christman Fox (Ahwatukee), Brian (Grand Haven, Mich.) and Kevin (Phoenix).

Eduarda (Dina) Margherite Riggio, 81, born Nov. 18, 1930, painlessly passed away on May 23, 2012. She is now reunited with her husband, Barbarino; her daughter, Ann Marie; and her son, John. She was also preceded in death by both parents and her brother, John Caserta. Surviving are her sister, Maria Caserta of Sicily, Italy; and her brother, Benito Caserta of Sicily, Italy.

Alta Ella Glass, 96, of Ahwatukee passed away on Monday, May 7 to be together again with her beloved husband, Ben.

Born Sept. 18, 1918 in Abbey, Saskatchewan to Ernest and Ethel Carefoot, Margaret M. Kennedy passed away April 26 in Lansing, Mich., at the age of 93. She was a former resident of Ahwatukee.

Services for Clifton “Cliff” LeRoy Iverson, an Ahwatukee Foothills resident since 1974, will take place on Tuesday, April 24 at Resthaven Park Mortuary and Cemetery, 4310 E. Southern Ave. in Phoenix, beginning with a visitation at 10 a.m. Iverson’s funeral service and interment will follow beginning at 11 a.m. He passed away on April 11 in Ahwatukee, he was 93 years old. Iverson was born on Dec. 24, 1918 to Sever and Florence (Barker) Iverson of Parkers Prairie, MN. He attended grade school and high school in Parkers Prairie and in 1941 he married Marion Eddy in Moorhead, Minn. He married Marion 57 years before her death in 1998. He served in the Army in the South Pacific for 3.5 years and after returning from World War II in 1945 the family lived in the cities of Glenwood and Fergus Falls, Minn. The family moved to Chicago, where they resided for 10 years before moving to Phoenix in 1965. Iverson was employed as a parts manager for a Massey-Ferguson dealership in Mesa. After he retired, he and Marion traveled, while enjoying time at home and spending time with their family. Iverson is survived by his daughter, Suzanne Toutloff of Ahwatukee; and his sister, Violet Lien of Moorhead, Minn. He is also survived by his son, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife, Marion; his parents, Sever and Florence; and by four brothers and one sister. Lawrence A. Ladue passed away at his home in Ahwatukee on Jan. 3. He was born Nov. 20, 1930, in St. Albans, Vt. He joined the United States Air Force in 1951 and was stationed at Luke Field where he worked as an aircraft electrician during the Korean War.

Charleen Grace "Charlee" Dailey, a 36-year resident of Ahwatukee Foothills passed away on Sunday, Oct. 23.

Michael Angelo Bruno, 54, of Ahwatukee Foothills passed away on July 19 in Kingman, Ariz. He was born on April 25, 1957 in Kenosha, Wis. He graduated from Tremper High School in 1975 in Kenosha after which he attended the University of Minnesota and Arizona State University.

Beloved husband, father, brother, uncle and friend passed away at age 78 on Sunday, May 15. Lt. Col. Donald W. Jones was born in Springfield, Ill., to Leroy and Hazel Jones and was the youngest of four boys. He graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in agriculture education. He married Norma Ruth Broaddus on March 3, 1956 in Raymond, Ill. Don served 26 years in the U.S. Air Force, starting his career as a navigator. He obtained a master's degree in education and later worked in contract management. He and Norma had three children, Deborah Jones-Ludwig (Larry), Donald William Jones (Jean Ericksen) and Thomas Paul Jones (Monica Barnett). After retiring from the Air Force, Don and Norma settled in Phoenix and Don worked for Motorola for 12 years. After retiring from Motorola he and Norma spent their winters traveling in their motor home. Don, along with Norma, also volunteered with several organizations such as SCORE "Counselors to America's Small Business," the American Legion and their church. Don leaves a legacy of Christian faith and deep love to his wife, children and seven grandchildren - Joshua, Donald (DJ), Sarah, Paula, Julianne, Brooke and Abbey. He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, brother Kermit and many nieces and nephews. Don was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Clarence and Charles. A memorial service took place on May 19 at Arizona Community Church, 9325 S. Rural Road in Tempe. In lieu of flowers, donations to Arizona Community Church or the American Legion would be appreciated.

David Small, 57 of Ahwatukee passed away on March 12. He was born in Hollywood, California on Dec. 23, 1953. David was a Cost Estimator in Aerospace. David is survived by his wife of 25 years, Lorrie, his daughters Carrie (Demian) Snipes, Alyson Small and sons Timothy and Devon Small, his grandchildren Lennon and Olivia Snipes. Peter Franklyn Romeo Jr., a 2007 Desert Vista High School graduate, passed away Sunday, Feb. 20 at Mercy Medical Center in Gilbert at the age of 22. He was surrounded by family and friends who loved and adored him. Peter currently was serving our country as a United States Marine and was training for deployment to Afghanistan March 16. He lived his life the way he wanted to - being a practical jokester, making people laugh, lifting weights and always hanging out with friends and family. Peter could recite every line of any movie he watched. He is survived by his mother, Dina Knight; father, Pete Romeo; sisters, Christina, Stephanie, Brooke and Brianna; along with his step-parents, Laurie Romeo and Josh Knight; grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. His life was cut way to short, and he will be dearly missed by all those who knew him. Visitation will be at Carr-Tenney Mortuary from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25 and funeral services will be at Corpus Christi Catholic Church at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 26. Peter will be laid to rest at Valley of the Sun Cemetery in Chandler.

Ahwatukee Foothills resident Mark Wells Cain passed peacefully in his sleep on Dec. 24, 2010 after a long illness. Mark was born Dec. 31, 1949 to James Cain and Liz Burke Cain in Bridgeport, Calif., where he lived until 1994. Mark married his bride, Cindy E. Cain, on May 16, 1981 in Bodie, Calif., at a state historical park his family resided in during the Gold Rush. Mark valued his family history, therefore, chose Bodie as his marriage site.

Wilbur Marshall Roach, 93, of Phoenix, made his peaceful passage to heaven on Dec. 18, 2010. He was born on July 5, 1917 in Fairbury, Ill., and was one of 11 children of Martha and Marshall Roach. He was a veteran of World War II with four years in the 95th Signal Battalion. He served in the European/African/Middle Eastern Theater in Iran for three years. He married Bonnie Irene Odom on Dec. 4, 1941 and he devoted his life to taking care of her. They were married 54 years until her passing in 1995. He resided in Ohio most of his life until his retirement to Ahwatukee in 1982. He was proud to work in the Maintenance and Construction Department at Babcock and Wilcox Co. in Barberton, Ohio, where he retired in 1974 after 37 years. He enjoyed hunting and the family had many wonderful vacations in Canada, where family competed to catch the biggest fish. He is survived by his daughter, Regina Godwin, grandson Todd Godwin, and granddaughter Lori (Tom) Prather and their children, Emily and Ryan, all residing in Ohio. Also surviving is brother-in-law Glenn Snyder and family of Ohio, many nieces and nephews, and his companion the past few years, Gen Horn, and her family. Many thanks to nephew Gerry Roach, Gen, Denise and Larry Horn, and Howard and Mary Faber for taking such good care of him.

Frank Sucato, 63, passed away Monday, Dec. 6 after a long illness. As a resident of Ahwatukee since 1997, he worked seven years for Avent Inc., umpired Little League baseball/softball and belonged to Corpus Christi Catholic Church.

Lisa Marie Gusick, 55, of Ahwatukee Foothills passed away on Oct. 8, 2010. She was a real estate agent and licensed in the Realty Executives Ahwatukee office. Real estate ran in her family for decades and she learned the business from her late mother, Gene Gusick, an associate broker, and enjoyed being her mom's partner since 1986. When her mom retired in 2002, Lisa took the reins of the business. She was a respected, professional, ethical agent who served her clients well. Lisa is predeceased by her father, Joe, her mother, Gene, and brothers Joseph "Skip" Gusick and Johnny Gusick. She is survived by five nieces and nephews, her devoted husband of 26 years, John Withrow, and her beloved dogs, Sophie and Fred. A memorial service will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 5, at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 3550 E. Knox Road. Interment will be at St. Francis Cemetery-Phoenix in a private family service.
