Rose Mofford, Arizona’s first female governor, dies at 94

Rose Mofford, Arizona’s 18th governor and the first woman to hold the office, died Thursday morning in a hospice in Phoenix. She was 94.

She had been moved to Gardiner Home after suffering a fall at home.

Mofford was well-known for her beehive hairdo and friendly, hands-on style. She was credited with bringing stability to Arizona after the tumultuous one-year term and impeachment of Gov. Evan Mecham.

Mofford, a Democrat, served from 1988 to 1991.

“Cindy and I are saddened to learn of the passing of Rose Mofford, an Arizona trailblazer and treasure,” Sen. John McCain said in a release.

“After such a divisive episode, she rose above the partisanship and brought Republicans and Democrats together to make Arizona stronger and more prosperous. And she did so with good humor and undeniable grace.”

In 1988, Mofford was instrumental in keeping the Cactus League in Arizona, and the Chicago Cubs spring training in Mesa. The former softball player from Globe courted Cactus League owners, appointed a special commission on the league’s health and found new sources of baseball funding.

Mofford is a member of the Arizona Softball Hall of Fame and has softball fields named after her throughout the state.
