Rhoda Jane Claydor passes away

Rhoda Jane Claydor, 98, went to be with the Lord on July 21. She was born in Dickenson County, Va., grew up in Pikeville, Ky., raised her family in Oxon Hill, Md., and spent most of her retirement in Ahwatukee, with the past two years living at Mountain Park Senior Living. She was active at the Pecos Recreation Center and with Ahwatukee Foothills Family YMCA’s Outreach Programs for Ahwatukee Seniors (Y OPAS).

Upon finishing her freshman year at Pikeville College in 1935, Rhoda went to Washington D.C. to attend the Washington School of Secretaries. Graduating in one year she obtained a position at the newly established Social Security Administration. In February 1943 during World War II Rhoda enlisted to serve in the Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service (the Navy’s WAVES). Quickly moving up the ranks she became a candidate for the officer training school. She then became an ensign in Washington D.C., supervising a unit for the Navy’s Bureau of Ships. Upon receiving her honorable discharge in 1945 she married sailor Lynn Robert Maines and they moved to Maryland to raise their family.

Rhoda then went to work for the Voice of America assuming a variety of broadcasting duties, retiring in 1979. While on vacation with her son Barry and family, Rhoda met Norman Claytor during a tour of Mt. Rushmore. They married two years later in 1984 in Coca Beach, Fla., where they lived two years before moving to Ahwatukee. Rhoda was passionate about the Lord, her family and friends. She loved an “adventure” and especially loved traveling, playing bridge and reading. Rhoda was a hero to her family and cherished and adored by all. She was the best in every person and in every situation. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Lynn Robert Maines, and second husband, Norman Watkins Claytor; sister, Elizabeth Kelly, and brother, Frank Marrs. She is survived by her children Tim Maines (Bonnie), Barry Maines (Patti) and Cindy McNally; stepdaughter Annette Clem (Dick); grandchildren, Carol Anthony, Scott Maines, Shandine Maines, Shane Curtis and Todd Curis; step grandchildren Todd Clem and Sherry Bell; and 14 great grandchildren.

A memorial service was held on July 25 at Phoenix Memorial Park and Mortuary. Donations may be made to the Sally Rose Marrs endowed Scholarship fund that Rhoda established in her mother’s memory at University of Pikeville, Development Office 147 Sycamore St., Pikeville, Ky., 41501-9979.
