Darcy Frear, a Desert Vista High graduate and biomedical engineering major in Arizona State’s Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering and Barrett, the Honors College, has won the Greater Phoenix Area 2013 Outstanding Engineering Student award.

Frear carries a 3.9 GPA, has been involved in research during all four years as an undergraduate, worked as an intern with a major international engineering company, and with University of California, Berkeley. She has served as treasurer of the ASU chapter of the Society of Women Engineers and as president of the Biomedical Engineering Society ASU chapter and the badminton club. She has also contributed her time as a peer mentor to Barrett Engineering students for the past two years.

Students selected for the award demonstrate exceptional effort to gain experience beyond their coursework through internships, research and student competitions, and taking opportunities to develop leadership, teamwork, mentoring and communications skills.

Frear will be pursuing a PhD program at Harvard University in speech and hearing bioscience and technology program this fall.
