Lina, Summer and Greg Geryak

The Valley of the Sun YMCA brought together 19 families to the US Airways Center recently for the fifth annual Family of the Year awards. Every year each of the Valley of the Sun YMCA branches nominates a deserving family whose volunteerism, contributions and support of the Y have made an impact in their communities.

The Ahwatukee Foothills Family YMCA chose the Geryak family, Greg, Lina and Summer, as its family of the year. The Geryak family has been a critical part of the Ahwatukee Foothills Family YMCA’s financial development and community relationship building over the past seven years. Greg served as board president for an extended three-year term when our communities were facing challenging economic times. He worked to position the Y in Ahwatukee Foothills and helped raise more than $100,000 toward the Ahwatukee capital project by building Y relationships with local businesses and service clubs. Greg has provided leadership for the annual Strong Kids and Families Campaign both as chairman and a President’s Club level campaigner. The Geryak family can be seen working out together at the Y and are visible at many community events. Lina worked part time at the Y as well as being a valuable volunteer at their special events. Summer, currently a junior in high school, has grown up at the Y. She has been a teen volunteer and served many hours in the Y Amazing Kids Center helping care for the younger children while their parents use the facility to work out or attend a class or event.
