Thomas achieves Eagle Scout rank
Ahwatukee Foothills resident Matthew Thomas, 15, has earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He is a member of Troop 278 led by scoutmaster Alan Moore.
For his Eagle project, Thomas created activity books for children at Mercy Gilbert Medical Center that contain word searches, crosswords, coloring, mazes and similar activities. He and volunteers drew and created the material for the books, then made copies, assembled and bound them. The books are available in four versions for different age groups and each is about 20 pages long. In addition to providing 40 copies of each book, Thomas provided the hospital with master sheets and the binding machine he bought with the funds he raised so that hospital volunteers may make future copies. The project involved 30 scouts and adults and took 134 hours to complete.
Thomas is a sophomore at Tempe Preparatory Academy and is the son of Robert and Linda Thomas.
Jiam earns Dean’s List honors at Johns Hopkins
Ahwatukee Foothills resident Nicole Jiam was named to the Dean’s List for academic excellence for the spring 2010 semester at The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md. She is majoring in neuroscience.
She is the daughter of Michael and Bianca Jiam and attended Desert Vista High School.
Edmunds to play the Beefeater in Shakespeare short
The award-winning Desert Rose Theatre returns to Mesa with a duet of one-act plays inspired by William Shakespeare and directed by founder Katherine Stewart. The collection, Shakespeare in Shorts, features George Bernard Shaw’s witty Dark Lady of the Sonnets and the totally irreverent Roadhouse in Arden by Philip Moeller. This also marks the debut of Desert Rose Theatre at its new space, POOL Together at 1240 E. Main St., Mesa.
Dark Lady of the Sonnets brings together a Beefeater (played by Ahwatukee Foothills resident David Edmunds); a brash, young William Shakespeare; the mysterious “Dark Lady” portrayed in many of his sonnets; and an aging, yet lustful virgin queen, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth I in a fictional account one fated evening in London.
Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 21, 22, 23, 28, 29, 30, Nov. 4, 5 and 6 and 2 p.m. Oct. 30 and Nov. 6. Tickets are $18 for adults, $16 for students, seniors (55+), teachers, military, and first responders and $14 for children 12 and younger.
