Keystone Montessori School in Ahwatukee recently received an unexpected surprise: a large, musical donation was delivered to the school. Included in the donation was a pallet full of ukuleles.

Gerry DeLaTorre, music specialist at Keystone and the Phoenix coordinator and instructor of Guitars In The Classroom (GITC), was contacted by Jessica Baron, founder and director of GITC, to let him know about the donation.

The ukuleles were donated to the Phoenix GITC program from Kala Brand Musical Instruments, one of GITC’s many sponsors. Now that the delivery was made, the instruments will be delivered to various teachers in the local GITC program for their classroom use, so they may continue to bring music and song-based instruction to their students.

Many of the teachers at Keystone have gone through the Phoenix GITC program with DeLaTorre, or are currently in the program, which meets on Saturday mornings at Bookman’s Exchange in Phoenix.

DeLaTorre uses ukuleles, as well as an assortment of other contemporary instruments, in his music program at Keystone. For more information about GITC, visit www.guitarsintheclassroom.org.
