Rufus Glasper, Ph.D., chancellor of the Maricopa Community Colleges, has been named recipient of the Jerry J. Wisotsky Torch of Liberty Award, the highest honor awarded by the Arizona Region of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL).

The award was established to honor people who demonstrate extraordinary humanitarianism and whose lives exemplify the principles on which the ADL was founded.

The award will be presented at an awards dinner later this month. The ADL is the nation's premier civil rights/human relations agency, fighting anti-Semitism and all forms of bigotry, defending democratic ideals and protecting civil rights for all.

As chancellor, Glasper is chief executive officer of the 10-college Maricopa County Community College District. He has served in that role since 2003, and previously held district leadership positions for more than two decades. In his role as CEO, Glasper has established "inclusiveness, engagement and respect" as the guiding principles of his administration.

Glasper currently serves as the committee co-chair with Dr. Tom Anderes, president of the Arizona Board of Regents of the Lumina Foundation on Education "Getting AHEAD" Initiative, whose goal is to reshape Arizona's post-secondary education system and enable more residents to successfully obtain a college degree.

As an adjunct professor for 12 years at Arizona State University, he shaped future educational leaders through his graduate course in higher education finance and budget. He serves the Phoenix community as a member of Greater Phoenix Leadership and on the boards of Greater Phoenix Economic Council, and the Valley of the Sun United Way.

Glasper earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Luther College (Decorah, Iowa), and a master's in school business administration from Northern Illinois University. He received his Doctorate of Philosophy degree in higher education finance from the University of Arizona. In May of 2005 he received of an Honorary Doctorate in Political Science from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix.
