Summer heat didn't keep 84 Ahwatukee seniors from attending bingo and lunch recently at Mountain View Lutheran Church. The Ahwatukee Foothills Rotary Club, with the YMCA's Outreach Program for Ahwatukee Seniors (YOPAS) and the Mountain View Lutheran Church Sages, sponsored the free event aimed to help seniors avoid summer isolation and thank summer volunteers.

Volunteer Jim Domschke kicked off the social by calling bingo. Ferguson of Rotary verified 30 winning cards. Past Rotary president Rick DePonte awarded prizes, many donated by local businesses. MVLC Pastor Glenn Zorb gave the invocation before a Bell' Italia lunch was served by Jochim and Roseland Barton of the MVLC Sages. David Dang of MidFirst Bank took photos and led clean-up.

As a gesture of appreciation, seniors contributed more than 500 nonperishable food items to the Ahwatukee Food Pantry.

YOPAS depends on volunteers to keep seniors over 62 independent by providing transportation support and friendly visits. To become a YOPAS volunteer or client, contact Linda Jochim at (602) 212-6088 or email opas@vosymca.org.

Ahwatukee Foothills Rotary supports and recognizes Ahwatukee citizens who have significant life experiences through the club's Vintage Excellence Program. Prospective members are invited to attend meetings every Tuesday at 6:15 p.m. at the Grace Inn. For more information, visit www.ahwatukeefoothillsrotary.com.
