Phoenix Sun Charities has named Improving Chandler Area Neighborhoods (ICAN), an East Valley youth program, recipient of the annual Playmaker Award grant of $100,000. The award is the largest amount given annually and is funded by Phoenix Suns Charities' 39 Playmaker donors.

ICAN was chosen for its youth programs, which are research and evidence based to prevent substance abuse, gang activity and juvenile delinquency in youth ages 5 to 18.

The grant will go toward construction of a new 21,000-square-foot facility for ICAN, currently scheduled to begin construction this month. With the award, the Phoenix Suns Charities receive naming rights to the basketball court at the new facility.

The need for a new facility for ICAN has emerged out of significant growth for the 20-year-old nonprofit. Since 2006, ICAN has seen more than a 260 percent increase in youth daily attendance, which is coupled with significant municipal growth around the current facility that limits expansion options at the current site.

The new will include six class rooms, a technology and learning center, dedicated teen center, half gym, administrative offices, community conference rooms and a basketball court.

For more than 20 years, ICAN has provided nationally accredited preventative programming to at-risk youth in Chandler to provide them with skills and supports needed to make positive decisions when it comes to substance abuse, gang activity and juvenile delinquency. ICAN does not cost anything for participants or their families to be involved with the programs. For more information, call (480) 821-4207 or visit www.icanaz.org.
