Ahwatukee Foothills resident Serenity Chavez, 5, has been selected as a state finalist in the National American Miss Arizona state pageant set for July 16 and 17 at the Doubletree Paradise Valley Resort in Scottsdale.

The National American Miss pageants are for girls 4 to 18 in five age divisions, and Chavez will compete in the Princess 4 to 6 age division. The winner will receive $1,000, the official crown and banner, trophy, roses and air transportation and sponsor fees to compete in the national pageant in California.

The pageants are dedicated to celebrating America’s future leaders and equipping them with life-long skills. The pageant program is based on inner beauty and emphasizes the importance of gaining self confidence, learning good sportsmanship and setting and achieving personal goals.

Chavez will attend kindergarten at Kyrene de las Lomas Elementary School.
