The 2012 Y Angels golf tournament and dinner, now in its eighth year and held last month, has raised more than $1.5 million dollars for the Valley of the Sun YMCA’s education scholarship programs. What began as a charity event to help fund the creation of the Desert Foothills Family YMCA now gives 100 percent of proceeds raised each year to educational scholarships for deserving YMCA youth as well as crucial funding for several YMCA educational programs.

Under the guidance of Desert Mountain resident and four-time event chair Erika Greaves, the Y Angels golf tournament and dinner has grown to one of the top fundraisers for the Valley of the Sun YMCA and one of the most successful in the Valley, ranked among the top 50 charity events in 2011 by the Phoenix Business Journal.

The Y Angels Board, upon completion of the Desert Foothills Family YMCA in 2009, shifted the event’s focus to educational scholarships for deserving YMCA youth and the community programs supporting them including Las Artes de Maricopa, i-Learn and Y Achievers.

In addition to testimonials from Y scholarship awardees, this year’s Y Angels dinner and golf tournament featured eight honored guests, service members from the Papago Army National Guard. A strong supporter of military families, three of this year’s 27 event sponsors, Cognizant, PGBA, LLC and Spectrum Healthcare donated tournament spots to deserving men and women to play and represent their branch of the military.
