The Girl Scouts of Ahwatukee Foothills recently hosted a Recruitment Rally at the Pecos Park Community Room. Girls from kindergarten through 12th grade were invited to the event to speak with school organizers, leaders and girls in troops. Many of the troops that were on hand shared hands-on activities showcasing what they like best about Girl Scouts. Leaders also shared what they like most about volunteering and how fun and rewarding it is to work with girls.
The traditional way to participate in Girl Scouts is to join a troop. Troops are formed based on the availability of adult volunteers. Some girls may be involved in other activities and find that troop meeting dates don’t work for their schedule. For girls that don’t join a traditional troop, there are three different opportunities to participate in quality programs. Some girls choose specific council sponsored programs/series membership pathways. Others choose to join as an independent girl and work with a parent on a journey book. Ahwatukee has a volunteer coordinator for independently registered girls (sometimes called Juliettes or IGMs) who help to organize and sometimes chaperones their participation in local Girl Scout events in Ahwatukee. Independent girls can still participate in product sales to help pay of participation in these kind of programs (both in Ahwatukee and council-wide).
The third way a girl may participate in Girl Scouts once a month is through the “First Saturday” program. The staff in the East Valley, with the help of numerous volunteers, offers a monthly Girl Scout troop of girls who don’t have leadership in their area. The girls meet the first Saturday of each month from November until May, sell cookies, and have a year-end celebration. They participate in Girl Scout programs that will increase their leadership skills and help them gain confidence while teaching them to be strong in their own values.
