Volunteers handed out Subway sandwiches June 21 to nearly 800 at-risk youth after they were treated to the Valley Youth Theatre’s production of “The Wiz” at the Herberger Theatre in downtown Phoenix.
The special, free matinee was made possible through Valley Youth Theatre’s “Sponsor-A-Seat” program in which the kids’ tickets are purchased through donations.
The program, now in its 16th year, has allowed more than 8,000 children to experience what may be their first and only theatrical performance.
