Mikaela Martin thought it best to put herself in the shoes of others less fortunate. Last year the 17-year-old Horizon Honors High School senior and cross-country track member started a program at her school to collect old pairs of tennis shoes, clean them, and then donate them to the Tempe Salvation Army. The honor student was able to collect 180 pairs of shoes, completing the project on Thanksgiving Day while passing out the shoes to homeless individuals.

For Martin’s dedication in giving back to the community, Fulton Homes named her the latest winner of the Fulton Homes Character Counts program.

Fulton Homes honored Martin with a $100 gift certificate to Just Sports, and the chance at winning a $5,000 scholarship at an awards banquet on May 29, which paid tribute to all of the “Character Counts” winners.

Along with her expertise in the classroom, Martin exemplifies the quintessential student-athlete. She is an honor student with a near 4.0 GPA. She finished in the top 30 in the state of Arizona in cross-country having only started less than two years ago. She is a three-year starter for my basketball team and is actively involved on campus.
