After recently celebrating its first anniversary, the South Mountain Community Library in Phoenix is being recognized with a North American Copper in Architecture (NACIA) award for its outstanding use of architectural copper and copper alloys.

James Richärd, from Richärd+Bauer Architecture, is responsible for designing the library using a copper clad system, giving the building a unique aesthetic and appearing like an architectural oasis in the Arizona desert.

The structural steel building is sheathed in a naturally ventilating copper rain screen with the pattern acting as an abstraction of a digital bar code.

The NACIA awards program aims to identify projects that display innovation and excellence in architectural copper applications in three categories: new construction, renovation/restoration and ornamental applications.

The program is sponsored by the Copper Development Association (CDA) and the Canadian Copper & Brass Development Association (CCBDA).
