Award-winning artist Ana Thiel will be the featured guest at South Mountain Community College's Hispanic Heritage Month celebration, Sept. 13 to 15. Thiel will discuss her art and inspiration with students during her visit, which will also include a presentation open to the general public at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15, in the SMCC Performance Hall at 7050 S. 24th St. Admission is free.
Thiel has exhibited all around the world and her work appears in public and private collections in many countries. She has twice been the recipient of a fellowship from the Mexican Council for the Arts and in 2006 won first prize at the Latin American Biennial of Art in Glass from the Museum of Glass and the National Council for the Arts in Mexico.
Combining her industrial design background with years of experience in mixed media, Thiel also creates site-specific three-dimensional works. She teaches workshops and offers lectures on art, creativity, and sculpture at universities and cultural institutions around the world.
