Students attending Arizona’s three state universities saved approximately $40.1 million on their textbooks over the last five years as a result of cost-saving measures adopted by the Arizona Board of Regents.

In 2006, the board commissioned a task force of university officials and students to evaluate the escalating cost of textbooks and related materials and provide recommendations on strategies to mitigate risings costs for students. The board then adopted a series of recommendations provided by the task force in 2007 and directed the universities to implement them, which served as the catalyst for millions of dollars in savings for students. Some of the savings measures implemented include: creating book buyback incentives for students, encouraging the use of e-books, expanding textbook rental programs, establishing uniform deadlines for faculty textbook orders for new semesters, establishing procedures to increase on-time book orders, and increasing communication with faculty, staff, administrators and students about cost-saving measures available.
