The city of Mesa Solid Waste Management Department and East Valley Institute of Technology (EVIT) have partnered to develop a program that provides students with real world experience in steel fabrication while providing an essential service to meet the city’s business needs.

Under the guidance of school instructors, students refurbish Mesa trash containers in need of repair. The Solid Waste Management Department provides the materials needed to repair the containers and inspects each finished product to ensure it meets city specifications. The pilot program began in the fall of 2011 and has proven to be successful. Twenty front load trash bins have been repaired by EVIT students and an additional four bins are projected to be completed before the end of the school year.
