The Paragon Science Academy junior high and high school student council members completed community service at Ahwatukee’s Hawthorn Court last week.

The students visited the facility and learned about hospice care, as well as dementia and Alzheimer’s — mind altering diseases that affect the brain’s ability to remember.

They also had the opportunity to see how a retired service dog is used in the treatment of these patients. They spent a day at Hawthorn Court where employees shared stories with the students to prepare them for their visit. Afterwards, the students played a volleyball game with the residents.

Paragon Science Academy is located at 5580 W. Chandler Blvd.
