On the same day community members gathered to celebrate the first anniversary of its grand opening, South Mountain Community Library was honored by Valley Forward and Salt River Project with three, first-place Crescordia awards for environmental excellence.

The library, operated jointly by Phoenix Public Library and South Mountain Community College, won first place in the categories of Buildings and Structures, Civic; Buildings and Structures, Institutional; and Art in Public Places, for the multi-faceted public artwork “Passage” by Mags Haries, Lajos Héder and poet Alberto Rios at a ceremony on Sept. 29.
