Arizona Beagle, Boxer Luv rescues selected as grant recipients

The Petco Foundation’s Holiday Wishes campaign, in partnership with Halo, Purely for Pets, awarded a grant of $5,000 to Arizona Beagle Rescue and $5,000 to Boxer Luv Rescue. The two organizations were selected as winners from more than 3,000 stories that were submitted by animal adopters across the country, which celebrated how their adopted pets have changed and enriched their lives. The Petco Foundation selected 53 stories from the pool of 3,000 submissions as winners. The 53 animal welfare organizations referenced in the stories as the adopting organizations will received a combined $750,000 in grants to celebrate their life-saving work, and selected winners will receive Halo dog or cat food.

Charity Dog Wash Nov. 9

Boxer Luv Rescue and Melinda’s Pampered Pets are hosting a charity dog wash from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, at 4302 E. Ray Road, Phoenix (near Jamba Juice). Attendees can choose between a wash-and-dry only for $20, or the $30 package, which includes wash and dry, nails clipped and ears cleaned. There’s an additional $5 charge for long hair. All breeds are welcome; all dogs must be on a leash. Dog treats and homemade baked goods will be for sale. Cash, Visa, Discover and MasterCard are all accepted for payment; no checks. All proceeds benefit Boxer Luv Rescue, a nonprofit organization that rescues over 600 dogs a year and depends solely on donations. On Saturday, Oct. 11, the parking lot of ReThinc Advertising will be filled with clean canines during the agency’s fifth annual Rescue Rinse. Valley residents are invited to bring their pups in from 9 a.m. to noon to get squeaky clean and showered with affection for charity. This year’s beneficiary will be Lucky Dog Rescue, an all-volunteer, non-profit animal rescue organization base in Scottsdale.

Rescue Roundup visits high country

Saturday, July 26, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. marks the biggest canine adoption event in northern Arizona: The Rescue Roundup. This year, the event will be at the Flagstaff City Hall Front Lawn. The purpose of the event is to educate the public about adopting animals from shelters and rescue organizations. More than 40 different rescues, shelters and vendors will be on hand to explain, promote and demonstrate canine care.

Arizona Humane Society unveils new cat isolation area

The Arizona Humane Society unveiled a new cat isolation area at its Nina Mason Pulliam Campus for Compassion. The isolation area is the second of its kind for the Arizona Humane Society after the first one was expanded in 2010. The new space has been open roughly six weeks and has had approximately 40 temporary residents, some of whom are now in foster care and others who have recovered and are now in their forever homes. The space requires those who enter to gown and glove up while also wearing removable show covers. Daily evaluations of these animals include how they are responding to the medications, attitude, appetite and hydration. In addition, the new space gives AHS the ability to get to know the cats even better and provide that information to adopters.

Make a Chihuahua your best buddy and save $50 at the Arizona Animal Welfare League & SPCA (AAWL & SPCA). The Best Buddy program provides extra help for any questions or medical or behavior issues the animal may have, during the first 30 days after adoption. Adopters also have lifetime support from the organization with low-cost veterinary services, classes and more. As part of the adoption guarantee, each adopter will receive free pet health insurance for 30 days, a free medical helpline that is monitored 24 hours/seven days per week and a free behavior helpline for the first 30 days after the adoption. If a medical issue is identified, AAWL has a low-cost clinic that works with the adopter and the pet to solve the problem. If it is a behavior issue, the behavior experts at AAWL give advice, or they may recommend one of the many training classes offered by the organization.

AAWL to offer popular teen camp Oct. 7-11

The Arizona Animal Welfare League (AAWL) and Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) is making its most popular education program available to teens in the East Valley with a fall session, Camp Vet Basic, a week-long, full-day camp for 12 to 17 years olds. This hand-on career discovery program introduces campers to a wide variety of animals and the care they require, while learning what it takes to become a veterinarian. The camp is offered at the Arizona Agribusiness and Equine Center Red Mountain campus, 2165 N. Power Road., Mesa, Oct. 7-11. Dangers of leaving your pet in a parked car

With the summer here, pet travel is at its height. Whether you’re parking in the shade, just running into the store, or leaving the windows cracked, it is still not OK to leave your pet in a parked car. The temperature inside a car can skyrocket after just a few minutes. Parking in the shade or leaving the windows cracked does very little to alleviate this pressure cooker.

Olive is sweet and polite

Olive is an exceptionally polite and sweet 2-year-old Pit-Bull mix who gets along with everyone. She is great with other dogs, has the patience and love for children and the energy for long walks and hikes, however, cats are not her favorite thing in the world. Olive is the epitome of a lap dog and is always trying to be right beside you and in the middle of all the action. She is also exceptionally smart, already knowing sit and fetch and having a basic understanding of potty training. Olive is spayed, microchipped and up to date on all vaccinations.

Phoenix veterinarian named best in nation by Pets Best Insurance

Pets Best Insurance, a U.S. pet insurance agency, has named Dr. Irvin Ingram as the nation’s best veterinarian of 2012. Ingram, who treats animals at the Phoenix-based All Creatures Animal Hospital, took home the top honors of the 2012 My Vet’s The Best contest, which featured more than 20 finalists from across the country. Developed by Pets Best Insurance to recognize outstanding veterinarians who go above and beyond to keep pets healthy, the 2012 contest culminated with a presentation at the Western Veterinary Conference in Las Vegas. During the event, Dr. Jack Stephens, president and founder of Pets Best Insurance, announced Ingram as the winner and presented the veterinarian with a check for $1,000 to support his charitable work.
