The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation honored local Marines and several significant community leaders at its Arizona awards dinner at the Westin Kierland Resort in Scottsdale on May 12.

Last year, the Arizona awards dinner raised $1.2 million and provided 34 scholarships to Arizona students whose Marine or Navy Corpsmen parent had been killed or wounded in combat, and to those who demonstrated financial need.

Founded to serve the mission of “Honoring Marines by Educating Their Children,” the scholarship foundation is the nation’s oldest and largest provider of need-based scholarships to military families.

The Semper Fidelis award went to Ed Robson, chairman and CEO of Robson Communities and Veteran Marine. Globe and Anchor award went to Rich Boals, Air Force veteran and president and CEO of Blue Cross, Blue Shield of Arizona.

Service Above Self award went to Marine and Arizona Supreme Court Justice Michael Ryan (posthumously) and Wayne Newton, Mr. Las Vegas and chairman of the USO celebrity circle.

Lifetime Achievement award went to Lee Hanley, chairman and CEO of Vestar and veteran Marine.
