Hospice of the Valley has been awarded a $110,000 grant from St. Luke’s Health Initiatives to develop resiliency in dementia caregivers through mindfulness training.

Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction helps people increase awareness of present-moment experiences and use that awareness to respond more skillfully to everyday stress.

The one-year grant project will be a component of Hospice of the Valley’s Palliative Care for Dementia program, which provides education and support to dementia caregivers at a cost of $250 a month.

Participants also include patients enrolled in the government’s AHCCCS and ALTCS programs for people with limited financial means.

The goal is to support the caregiver so the person with dementia can stay at home for as long as possible – an environment that is far more therapeutic and less costly than a nursing facility or hospital.

The grant-funded project will be tested with three groups of 10-12 PCD caregivers who will participate in weekly two-hour sessions for eight weeks.

Participants will be evaluated before and after the training for stress and anxiety. They will be compared to control groups composed of people on waiting lists for future classes.
