A 3-year-old girl passed away last Saturday morning after being beaten the previous Thursday for not eating a hotdog.

Fire crews responded to the area of 4700 East Warner Road around 5:20 p.m. on Oct. 27 after getting a call that a child was not breathing, said Sgt. Steve Martos of the Phoenix Police Department. They found the 3-year-old, Dani Mayo, covered in bruises. The little girl's stepfather, Corey Rasean Daniels, 22, told firefighters that she had choked on a hotdog.

"They quickly determined that foul play was involved and the Phoenix police were called to the scene," Martos said. "The little girl was transported to a hospital, where she was in extremely critical condition."

The girl passed away early on the morning of Oct. 30.

"Detectives investigating this case, learned that Daniels was taking care of the girl when she did not want to eat the food he had prepared her for dinner," Martos said. "Daniels then severely beat the girl with his fists and a belt."

Daniels was originally booked into the Maricopa County Jail and charged with four counts of child abuse. He will now also be facing homicide charges, Martos said.

The girl's mother was working Thursday when the incident happened.
