Arizona Opera, currently in its 42nd season, is galvanizing its future as a world-renowned opera company through its $8.5 million “Raising Our Voice” capital campaign. Arizona Opera has always been an integral element in Arizona’s arts community, and now, the company is embarking on a watershed and transformational next step with a new Opera Center. Centrally located in the heart of the Phoenix Arts District, and easily accessible by light rail, the center will anchor the cultural gateway, along with the neighboring Phoenix Art Museum, Heard Museum and Phoenix Theatre.
During the initial phase of the campaign, Arizona Opera has reached 61 percent of the total campaign goal, including a $3.2 million city of Phoenix bond. Arizona Opera now seeks to engage community members in this far-reaching cultural endeavor in the next phase of the campaign. For the first time in recent history, Arizona Opera’s full administrative, artistic and production departments will have the benefit of working under one roof.
When completed, the 28,000-square-foot-plus campus will include: a 6,500-square-foot black box rehearsal theater; an education opera theater; practice rooms; costume, wig and makeup pavilions; a music and opera archive and library; executive offices; and an outdoor public pavilion. The Opera Center will allow for the expansion of educational offerings for students of all ages, and its unique, contemporary spaces have been designed to tear down formal theatrical boundaries and deliver groundbreaking experiences to audience members.
