The city of Phoenix YouthBuild program, in partnership with G Street, unveiled the program’s latest sustainable construction project on April 12 at 2219 W. Indianola Ave.

The home remodel was previously an abandoned and foreclosed property. The renovation resulted in improving the home’s energy and water efficiency by more than 50 percent, and also improved the indoor air quality.

The home is certified green, verified by the National Association of Home Builders Research Center, for energy and water efficiency, and home ventilation.

The remodel also resulted in a G Home certification through G Street, a national leader in transforming foreclosed houses into efficient homes.

The certification is the most prestigious designation for the home building industry because of the professional design and location of the home for public transportation access for decrease car dependency.

Phoenix YouthBuild gives young men and women the opportunity to earn their General Education Development (GED), gain valuable skills in “green” construction and train to become leaders in their community. Participants set personal, educational and career goals and develop an educational/professional portfolio.

The “green” YouthBuild projects support building greener neighborhoods throughout the community, educating youth about the importance of creating a “green” city and training youth in sustainable construction.

YouthBuild is a national program funded by the U.S. Department of Labor, which awarded the city of Phoenix a $1.1 million grant from the Employment and Training Administration.

Phoenix YouthBuild is a partnership between the city’s Community and Economic Development Phoenix Workforce Connection, Arizona Call-A-Teen Resources Inc., Tumbleweed Center for Youth Development, Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona, Labor’s Community Service Agency, Maricopa Skill Center and GateWay Community College.
