The Phoenix City Council elected District 3 Councilman Bill Gates as vice mayor last week. He will serve in the position until the end of 2013.

“I look forward to this expanded role and the opportunity to learn more about the other council districts,” said Gates. “My focus this year will continue to be innovations and efficiencies — including smart technology — that will help us realize our goal of saving tax payers $100 million by 2015. While public safety will always be our No. 1 priority, other areas of focus will be the revitalization of vacant lots and retail spaces, economic development and maintaining and improving the Phoenix Mountain Preserve.”

Gates, who has served on the Phoenix City Council since July 2009, chairs the City Council Finance, Efficiency, Innovation and Sustainability Subcommittee, and serves on the Neighborhoods, Planning and Development, Housing and Homeless and Parks, Arts, Families and Seniors subcommittees. He also led the successful fall 2011 public campaign to preserve Phoenix Home Rule.

Gates is a lawyer for PING, a Phoenix-based golf equipment manufacturer. He also serves on the Governor’s Regulatory Review Council. Gates is a graduate of Deer Valley High School in Glendale and graduated from Harvard Law School in 1996. He is married and has two young daughters.
