The city of Phoenix has been awarded a $1 million grant to help construct and outfit a new Emergency Operations Center (EOC).

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security awarded the grant to help with the project, estimated to cost $3 million overall, with $2 million from voter-approved 2006 bond funds.

"The city's new Emergency Operations Center will make Phoenix better prepared to handle crises," said Mayor Phil Gordon. "We've worked hard to let the federal government know Phoenix is a national leader, and we appreciate the support for making our residents safer."

"This state-of-the-art EOC allows the city of Phoenix to be better prepared for natural and human-caused disasters," said Phoenix Emergency Management Coordinator Scott Krushak. "We will be able to accomplish more, with less federal assistance during emergencies."

The new EOC will provide additional space, incorporate improved communication systems, and better accommodate emergency personnel from all levels of government.

The Phoenix Office of Emergency Management and Fire Department prepared the grant, with support from the Arizona Department of Homeland Security.
