College will be a little bit less of a burden on one Ahwatukee Foothills student after an awards ceremony last week.

Adrianna Henderson was one of eight finalists for the Boys and Girls Clubs of the East Valley’s Youth of the Year award. At a banquet on Feb. 27, Henderson was named the winner and will receive $20,000 in scholarship funds over a four-year period from The Victoria Lund Foundation.

“I was nervous, my hands were sweating and everything,” she said. “It was great. I was speechless. I seriously had to catch my breath.”

Henderson, a senior at Horizon Community Learning Center, and each of the other seven finalists were winners of their respective Boys and Girls Clubs of the East Valley branch and will receive $1,000 each from Maricopa Community College District.

The win also puts Henderson in the running for the 2012 Arizona Youth of the Year title and she will compete against other Arizona winners in the 2012 Youth of the Year Legislative Breakfast at US Airways Center in Phoenix on April 17. The winner there will enter into the running for America’s National Youth of the Year in Washington, D.C.

But right now, Henderson is still reveling in her most recent victory.

“I was confident I did a great job, and I was hoping it was me,” she said. “I think it’s going to take until the middle of March before it’s done sinking in and then I start working on my state speech. It’s literally going to help everyone out. It’s going to help my parents out and I can even start saving up for grad school.”
