Discount Tire is bringing a car show to the Ahwatukee Foothills this weekend to benefit military service men and women and their families.
With all proceeds benefitting Phoenix organization Military Assistance Mission (MAM), the car show will help services offered to service men and women like food donations, financial assistance, and more.
In its fourth year, the car show has previously drawn crowds upward of 300 people at the location on Chandler Boulevard in Ahwatukee. Custom, restored and classic cars line the parking lot as nearly a dozen vendors set up shop for the fundraiser. Prizes, raffles, gift auctions, food and music will also be available.
Three-time motorcycle land-speed record holder Valerie Thompson will make an appearance at the event.
MAM CEO Margy Bons, who formerly participated in the event through the Arizona chapter of Operation Homefront, said she has a special kinship to one of the event’s display cars.
“It’s from 1976, the same year that my son was born,” said Bons, whose son died while serving in Iraq on Mother’s Day in 2005. “That was a knock on the door I never wanted to get on Mother’s Day.”
With a passion to help families across the state and all military service men and women, Bons said she is thankful for the Ahwatukee community and Discount Tire.
Store manager Joe Molera said the cool thing about the event is that it’s not just a car show, but it’s recognizing that car owners aren’t participating for a trophy and are just supporting the cause.
“There’s people out there who are waking up everyday being heros and risking their lives, and they come back and are lost,” Molera said. “Having an organization (like MAM) we can make a difference.”
The fourth annual benefit car show will be at Discount Tire, 4831 E. Chandler Blvd., on Saturday, March 16 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
