Kyrene School District is hosting its second Parent Summit this week with educational classes for parents that includes dinner and childcare.

With the first summit last fall serving more than 120 parents and guests, the district expanded the educational event to twice a school year. For $5, hour-long classes on topics like Common Core State Standards, what to expect in middle school, and how the district runs are available along with dinner and child care on Thursday at Kyrene Centennial Middle School in Ahwatukee.

“We just made it as affordable as we possible could,” said district prevention manager Amanda Hamm.

Popular classes for parents last fall, including sessions on teen drug trends, addressing school concerns, and how to support children in every grade level, will be returning this semester along with new topics.

Based on parent and staff feedback, common interests included learning more about Common Core and bilingual parenting. Both topics were added to the class rotation for parents.

During the summit, parents can enjoy a three-course dinner donated by Sodexo and then choose two classes to attend. Children also attend classes according to grade level such as an active game session, student finance and more.

“I feel like kids get just as much out of it as parents do,” Hamm said.

In an effort to better equip parents with the right support tools and knowledge with little cost, the district will begin offering the summit twice a year and continue to expand its class topics.

“I don’t know where else you can go and choose from a wide variety of topics like this, we hope everyone will take advantage of it,” Hamm said.

The Kyrene Parent Summit will begin with dinner and check-in at 4:45 p.m. on April 25 at Kyrene Centennial, 13808 S. 36th St.
