It took almost half her life to grow it out, but that didn’t stop Ahwatukee Foothills resident Jade Buzinski from cutting off a significant portion of her hair on Saturday morning.

Minutes before the transformation, she sat in a hair dresser’s chair, looked into the mirror, and was maybe thinking about what it would look like after the stylist went to work. At age 9, Buzinski said she had been growing her hair since she was “4 or 5” years old.

Moments later, she held the 10 inches that had just been cut off. Those 10 inches, she knew, would be going to a stranger that needs it more than she does.

Buzinski, a fourth-grader at Keystone Montessori in Ahwatukee, will be mailing off that portion of her hair to Locks of Love, a nonprofit organization that makes hairpieces from donated hair and gives them to children who, due to medical reasons, have lost their own.

“I just wanted to make it long (to donate) because my friends did it before and they told me about it,” she said. “When I measured it, it was just long enough. I feel proud, but excited.”

The 10 inches is the minimum amount someone can donate. Her mother, Jasmin Buzinski, said her daughter was about to get her hair cut for the summer, but came home with the idea one day to donate it to Locks of Love.

“When she came home and talked about giving it away, I thought it was a great idea,” she said. “She’ll miss her hair but it will grow back and she knows the kids that will be getting it, they can’t grow their own.”

Buzinski doesn’t expect it to take another half decade to grow her hair out again, but the young Ahwatukee Foothills resident will wait and see if she will get it cut for the organization again.

“I’ll probably do it another time,” she said. “It will mean a lot to someone.”
