On Sept. 23, 2014, Jonathan Derr, son of Randy and Lisa Derr, earned the Boy Scouts of America Eagle Scout Award. Derr is the 81st Eagle Scout in Ahwatukee Troop 278, a troop sponsored by Corpus Christi Catholic Church. A court of honor was on Nov. 26 to present him with his award.
For his Eagle Project, Derr decided to focus on helping troops stationed overseas. He contacted Packages From Home in Phoenix and set a goal of creating 100 care packages. With the help of volunteers from Troop 278, he organized a fundraiser to obtain cash donations and a donation drive at Corpus Christi to collect hygiene and food items. After conducting an assembly packing party, he delivered 107 complete packages for shipment and a large cash donation, plus several additional items. A special item included in the boxes were Stars for Our Troops. Derr obtained retired U.S. flags from the city of Chandler and organized volunteers to create mementos from the stars on those flags.
Jon is a senior at Horizon Community Learning Center in Ahwatukee. He is planning to attend Northern Arizona University and obtain a computer engineering degree.
